There is a two-thousand seat open amphitheatre – hosting summer concerts under the stars. The town has plenty of bars and restaurants and beach side tavernas, and topped by the big basilica of Panagia Koryfini.

On the beach of Nea Moudania are a happy round of swimming and sun-soaking, windsurfing and water skiing, pedalos and beach volleyball, punctuated by regular refreshment at strategically placed tavernas. Up at the top of the hill, your trek to the triple-aisle basilica, is rewarded with gorgeous views of the Kassandra peninsula. And from various viewpoints within the town, you’ll see sumptuous sunsets over the mountains and gleaming yachts on a glistening sea.

Local celebrations

The second week of July: Cultural manifestations which end with the very famous “Sardine Festival”.
8th September: Feast of the Virgin Mary of Korfini, at the church which is situated on a hill at the outskirts of the town.

Sightseeing

Zografou Tower: The Byzantine tower (14th cent.), the church (1842) and other structures (19th cent.) belonging to the “metochi” still exist today. Of particular interest is the fountain of the “metochi”, built in 1853, about 50m west of the tower.

Metochi of Aghios Panteleimon: The ruins of the “metochi” are found near the village of Nea Flogita. It was built during the second half of the 19th century and is directly related to the refugees of the entire Kalamaria area, because for many years after 1922, this is where the American hospital for refugees was organised and operated.

Information

Beaches: The sea of Nea Moudania is very shallow and ideal for younger and inexperienced swimmers. The beaches are well-maintained with cafes lining the beach, and the nearest is about 100m away from Pansion Argo.

Eating out: You’ll find plenty of cafés, restaurants and tavernas with menus designed for most peoples tastes. The best fish restaurants can be discovered by the beach and are definitely worth a visit for their fresh juicy fish dishes served with locally-produced vegetables, cooked to a traditional Greek recipe.

Nightlife: There are plenty of bars and clubs to keep you entertained until the small hours. The town also has a cinema and a waterfront open-air theatre showing quality productions throughout the summer.

Shopping: As the commercial centre of Halkidiki, Nea Moudania offers plenty of shops. Every Wednesday, the largest outdoor market in the area takes place.

Local information: This town is a good base from which to explore more of the area. At the top of Nea Moudania is a pretty, three-aisled basilica church housing an icon of Panagia Koryfini, which is worshipped as part of a summer festival. Alternatively, visit the small village of Zografou, built around a monastery where a Byzantine tower and crumbling church still stand. The monastery of Agios Pandeleimonos – once used as a hospital – near the village of Nea Flogita, also makes for an interesting afternoon of sightseeing.

Fishing Vessels Museum

The Museum is largely the result of forty years of untiring efforts by Stavros Kovrakis, a passionate collector of the treasures hidden in the seas of Greece. It also enjoys the support of the Nea Moudania Yacht Club.

The Museum has an educational and research role, also doing much to promote the local identity and keep alive its links with its history. The items on display include ancient anchors, fishing nets, fishing rods and hooks, compasses, beacons and lamps and many other intriguing exhibits. There are 3D recreations of a variety of fishing techniques, demonstrating how the different kinds of vessel and fishing nets are used, with replicas of fishing boats and a rich archive of documents and illustrations.

One of the most fascinating items is the bouyiandes, a traditional fishing vessel formerly seen in the Sea of Marmara, introduced to Greece by the refugees from Asia Minor. The Museum also offers a thrilling insight into the strange and magical world beneath the sea, with its vast range of plant and animal life.

The museum also has a multipurpose room that occasionally has hosted educational programs, art and photo exhibitions. The museum has a souvenir shop, a landscaped surrounding and a car parking.
